Story
Shiva is said to have 108 different names, each accompanied by a unique form. Each form of Shiva represents a different dimension. One of the most terrifying forms of Shiva is Kalabhairava – a fierce warrior adorned with a garland of skulls. Kalabhairava literally means one who is so terrifying that even time is fearful of him. In this form, Shiva is the destroyer of time.
In many traditions, Kaala Bhairav is revered as the guardian of sacred spaces and the protector of devotees who walk the path of dharma. Especially associated with the holy city of Kashi (Varanasi), he is seen as the one who helps devotees transcend the limitations of life and death and move beyond the fear of time itself.
The following account is from the Puranas.
Shiva manifested as a pillar of light to settle the dispute of superiority between Brahma and Vishnu. Brahma dishonestly proclaimed his victory, stating that he had discovered the higher end of the pillar of light. To punish him for his dishonesty and arrogance, Shiva produced Bhairava from the region between his brows. When Bhairava sought instruction from Shiva, the deity directed him to "worship Brahma with his sharp-pointed quick-moving sword". Bhairava decapitated the fifth head of Brahma for uttering the falsehood. Vishnu interceded on Brahma's behalf and sought mercy, and the two deities then worshipped Shiva.
Having committed the sin of brahmahatya (the murder of a Brahmin) by decapitating Brahma, Bhairava was pursued by the terrible female personification of the sin. The skull of Brahma was still attached to his hand. To expiate himself of the sin, Bhairava roamed the three worlds. He visited Vaikuntha, where he was honoured by Vishnu and Lakshmi. When Bhairava visited Kashi, the city of the liberated, Brahmahatya left him, and the skull of Brahma was released from his hand.
Ugra Deiva and Shvan
Kaala Bhairava is revered as a Ugra Deiva – a fierce deity. Ugra Deiva are considered to bring relief to devotees swifter than other gods. Other popular Ugra Deiva deities are Narasimha.
Also, dog is intimately connected to Kaal Bhairava serving as his vahana (vehicle or mount). This sacred, often black dog is known as Shvan. The relationship symbolizes the union of divine protection with loyalty, vigilance, and the crossing of boundaries between the living and the spirit world.
Devotees doing Kaala Bhairava sadhana often report having some experience of meeting with dogs in unusual circumstances (like helping in dark alley or near Bhairav temple).
Feeding or caring for stray dogs (especially black ones) is considered a powerful way to worship Kaal Bhairava, believed to alleviate karmic blockages, reduce the negative effects of Rahu and Shani (Saturn), and protect against evil forces.
